Russell Crowe was born on April 7, 1964, in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. He is a graduate of Auckland Grammar School. Crowe began his acting career in Australia, where he starred in several Australian films, including the critically acclaimed “Romper Stomper.” After this film, American actress Sharon Stone invited him to co-star in “The Quick & The Dead,” alongside Gene Hackman and Leonardo DiCaprio. However, this movie did not perform well at the box office.

In 1995, Crowe starred in the sci-fi film “Virtuosity” alongside Denzel Washington, followed by several lesser-known films such as “Rough Magic” (1995) and “No Way Back” (1996). His breakthrough role came in 1997, when he played a police officer in “L.A. Confidential.” After returning to Australia for “Heaven’s Burning,” he resumed acting in the U.S., starring opposite Salma Hayek in “Breaking Up.” Crowe took a brief hiatus from acting, returning in 1999 to star in “Mystery, Alaska” directed by Jay Roach. That same year, Crowe delivered one of his finest performances in “The Insider” alongside Al Pacino, directed by Michael Mann. His role in this film earned him nominations for both the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes for Best Actor, though he did not win.

In 2000, Crowe’s career skyrocketed with his iconic role in “Gladiator,” directed by Ridley Scott. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Crowe himself took home the Oscar for Best Actor. Following this success, he starred in “Proof of Life” with Meg Ryan, though the movie did not perform well at the box office. In 2001, Crowe portrayed mathematician John Nash, a Nobel laureate, in “A Beautiful Mind,” co-starring Ed Harris and Jennifer Connelly. This role earned him his third consecutive Oscar nomination for Best Actor and won him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Crowe continued his career with roles in “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “Cinderella Man” (2005), and “A Good Year” (2006), which was filmed in the UK and France.
