Anna Torv was born on June 7, 1979, in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria, Australia, and grew up on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Her father, Hans Torv, was born in Scotland and has Estonian roots, while her mother, Susan, has an Australian background. She has a younger brother named Dylan. Her father left when she was eight years old. She studied at Buena State High School and graduated in 1996. She attended the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Australia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Drama in 2001.

She began her acting career in theater in 1986, then diversified her work between theater, television, and film from 2002. In 2004, she appeared in the Australian drama series (The Secret Life Of Us) and voiced the character (Nariko) in the video game (Heavenly Sword) in 2007 and 2014. She starred in the BBC series (Mistresses) in 2008 and played the role of (Agent Olivia Dunham) in the series (Fringe), appearing in all episodes for five seasons from 2008 to 2013, which is the role she is most known for. She delivered a remarkable performance as (Frigina Gray) in the mini-series (The Pacific) produced by HBO in 2010, winning the Saturn Award for Best Emerging Actress that year. She portrayed a lady in the series (Deadline Gallipoli) in 2015.

Anna Torv married her co-star from (Fringe), Mark Valley, in 2008, but they separated after just one year of marriage.
