Biography, Life story
Lara Fabian was born on January 9, 1970, in the municipality of Etterbeek in the Brussels region of Belgium. She has a Belgian father and an Italian mother from the island of Sicily. Her real name is Lara Croquet.
Lara spent the first five years of her life in Catania, Sicily, her mother’s birthplace, before returning to Belgium. She exhibited artistic talent from a young age. In 1978, her parents gifted her a piano, fulfilling a dream for the young artist to play her own compositions and sing. During that time, she began taking private piano lessons, and with her father’s help, she gave her first performances in small theaters and amateur competitions.
She has achieved global fame and sings in French, English, and Italian, even performing in Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian at various events and concerts around the world. Her sales have exceeded 18 million copies to date. In addition to being a singer, Lara is a musician who plays the piano and guitar, a songwriter, and an actress who appeared in the musical film “De-Lovely,” which tells the story of artist Cole Porter.
In 1986, after winning the le tremplin competition in Brussels, she had the opportunity for her first solo performance; the songs “l’AZIZA est en pleurs” and “il y avait” by writer Marc Lhermet, in tribute to artist Daniel Balavoine, sold over 500 copies. Among the audience was producer Hubert Terheggen, who helped her get an invitation from the official channel of Luxembourg to represent the country in the 33rd Eurovision Song Contest held in Dublin in 1988, where she performed the song “croire,” which became popular in Europe. In 1990, she traveled with musician Rick Allison to Montreal, Canada, where she began producing her first album with his assistance, and had the opportunity to promote her artistic name in North America. In the summer of 1991, Lara released her first album titled “Lara Fabian,” consisting of 10 songs; it sold over 100,000 copies in Canada alone and received several international artistic awards for two consecutive years. Lara became a promising artist at a very young age (20 years old).
The two-year artistic journey in Canada helped Lara produce her second album “Envie” in 1994 with the help of producer and musician Rick Allison. The album won a gold record just two weeks after its release, along with several other awards. The songs “Tu t’en vas,” “Si tu m’aimes,” and “Leïla” reached the top of the charts at that time.
In 1996, a few months after obtaining Canadian citizenship, Walt Disney offered Lara the role of “Esmeralda” in the French version of the animated film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” which was an opportunity for her to transition and explore the world of acting.
In 1997, Lara joined Polydor and signed several albums with the company. “Pure,” produced by Rick Allison, sold over two million copies in France. The album won a platinum record just two weeks after its release. The singles “La Différence,” “Tout,” “Je t’aime,” and “Humana” (in Spanish) each sold over a million copies, leading to continued success and artistic awards.
In 1999, Lara released her first live album titled “Live,” with the clear goal of silencing the noise and controversy surrounding her performances.
