Biography, Life story
Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a Kenyan father from Nyanza, Kenya, named Barack Obama Sr., and an American mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, of English, Irish, and German descent from Wichita, Kansas.
His parents met in 1960 as students at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two, his father left the family to return to Kenya, seeing his son only once more before dying in a car accident in 1982. His mother later married an Indonesian oil engineer named Lolo Soetoro, and the family moved to Indonesia, where they lived until Obama was ten years old. He then returned to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents, Madelyn and Stanley Dunham, and attended school, graduating high school in 1979. In 1972, Obama’s mother returned to Hawaii, staying for five years, then moved back to Indonesia before returning to Hawaii in 1994, where she died of ovarian cancer in 1995.
Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, becoming one of the first African Americans to serve as president of the Harvard Law Review. He taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004 and worked as a civil rights attorney in Chicago.
He served three terms in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 to 2004, gaining national prominence after his keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. Subsequently, he was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2004 with the largest margin in Illinois history.
Obama announced his candidacy for the presidency in February 2007 and secured the Democratic nomination after defeating rival Hillary Clinton. He became the first African American nominated for president by a major U.S. party. Obama won the presidential election on November 4, 2008, defeating Republican John McCain in a significant victory, including in traditionally Republican strongholds like Ohio and Virginia, and was inaugurated on January 20, 2009. He is the first African American president of the United States and the first president born in Hawaii, with Joe Biden as his vice president.
