Diane Kruger, a former model and German actress, was born in 1976 in Algermissen near Hildesheim, Germany, where she grew up. Her father, Hans Heinrich Heidbrüg, is a computer specialist, and her mother, Maria Teresa, works at a bank. She has a younger brother named Stefan. During her childhood, Kruger aspired to be a ballet dancer and successfully auditioned for the Royal Ballet School in London. However, an injury ended her ballet career. She moved to Paris, shifting her focus to modeling and learning French. In 1992, she represented Germany in the Elite Model Look competition. She began working as a model, appearing in numerous advertisements for prestigious brands like Chanel, Armani, Dior, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton, and gracing the covers of magazines such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan.

Kruger decided to quit modeling and pursue acting, taking classes at Cours Florent. She landed small roles in French films and changed her name to Kruger to suit her acting career. Her first film role was in 2002’s The Piano Player, alongside Dennis Hopper and Christopher Lambert, a television film directed by Jean-Pierre Roux. That same year, she had her first lead role in Mon Idole, directed by her then-husband, Guillaume Canet. She played Julia Wood in the film Michel Vaillant in 2003 and Lisa in Wicker Park in 2004, starring Josh Hartnett and Rose Byrne. She gained fame through her roles in Troy and National Treasure in 2004, alongside Nicolas Cage and Sean Bean. Other notable films include Joyeux Noël (2005) and Copying Beethoven (2006). She reprised her role as Dr. Abigail Chase in National Treasure: Book of Secrets in 2007. That same year, she was a hostess at the 60th Cannes Film Festival and, the following year, served on the jury at the 59th Berlin Film Festival. Her fame grew further with her performances in Inglourious Basterds (2009) and Unknown (2011).

Diane Kruger married French actor and director Guillaume Canet in 2001. They appeared together in the film Joyeux Noël (2005) but agreed to divorce in 2006, citing their busy careers as a reason for their unsuccessful marriage. She began a relationship with Joshua Jackson in 2006.

Kruger moved to Los Angeles in 2013 for her role in the series The Bridge.
