Biography, Life story

Laila Fawzy was born on October 20, 1918, in Turkey to an Egyptian father who was a textile merchant with shops in Cairo, Damascus, and Istanbul, and a mother who was a granddaughter of Kaysar Ali Pasha, one of the Turkish army leaders during the reign of the Ottoman sultans. She is considered one of the most beautiful actresses in the history of Egyptian cinema, selected by an American magazine in the 1940s as one of the most beautiful women of her time. Her first role in Egyptian cinema was as a young girl in the film “Masna’ al-Zawjat” in 1941. She excelled in portraying queens, princesses, and aristocratic women, and also shone in villainous roles. Over her career, she appeared in approximately 85 films and 40 television series. Her last notable film roles were in “Darbat Shams” (1979) alongside Nour El-Sherif and “Al-Malaika” (1983) directed by the Tunisian Reda Al-Bahi. She completely stopped acting after the emergence of low-budget films, known as “Films of Contracts,” which were produced with poor artistic quality for video distribution to Gulf countries.

Laila Fawzy was married three times: first to the actor Aziz Othman, second to the actor Anwar Wagdi, and third to the broadcaster Jalal Maowad. She did not have children from any of her marriages.

Laila Fawzy passed away on January 12, 2005, at Dar Al-Fouad Hospital in Cairo after a prolonged illness. Her funeral was attended by a significant public and artistic presence from Mustafa Mahmoud Mosque in Mohandessin. Before her death, she declined an offer from a satellite channel to sell her memoirs for a large sum of money.
