Leonardo DiCaprio was born on November 11, 1974 in Los Angeles, California, United States, and he is the only son of his parents. His mother, Irmeline, is a German-born former legal secretary who moved her family from Germany to the United States during the 1950s. His father, George DiCaprio, was a comic book illustrator, producer and distributor, and is of half Italian and half German descent. Leonardo’s parents met when they were in college, then moved to Los Angeles, then separated when he was one year old, and he lived most of his childhood with his mother. He attended Sidis Elementary School and graduated from nearby John Marshall High School. He spent part of his life in Germany with his maternal grandparents, Wilhelm and Helene, and he speaks German fluently.
Leonardo DiCaprio began his artistic career by appearing in advertisements and short educational films, and in 1990 he joined commercials at the age of 14, then he got the opportunity to act in the Parenthood series, after which he got secondary roles in series such as (Santa Barbara) and the sitcom (Growing Pains) in The beginning of the 1990s. He got his first movie role in 1991 in the science fiction movie (Creatures 3), but his first major appearance in the cinema was in 1993 in the movie (This Boy’s Life) alongside the actor (Robert De Niro). Thanks to his angelic face and distinguished talent, he achieved international fame through James Cameron’s Titanic in 1997, the film that became the highest-grossing film until recently.
Leonardo DiCaprio is a close friend of actor Tobey Maguire, whom he met during an audition for the Parenthood series in 1990. He is an old friend of both actors Kevin Connolly and Lucas Haas, and fellow actress Kate Winslet, who co-starred with him in Titanic and Revolutionary Road.
DiCaprio dated model Kristen Zhang on and off for several years, and British model Emma Miller. In 2000, he met Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen, whom he dated on and off until their separation in 2005. DiCaprio began a relationship with model Bar Refaeli in November 2005 after he met her at a party in Las Vegas for members of the U2 band. In the course of their trip to Israel in March 2007, they met with Israeli President Shimon Peres and visited Refaeli’s hometown of Hod Hasharon. In May 2011, the news spread that their relationship had ended. In 2005, DiCaprio was badly injured in the face when model Aretha Wilson hit him on the head with a broken bottle during a party in Hollywood. After pleading guilty in 2010, she was sentenced to two years in prison.
DiCaprio owns a home in Los Angeles and an apartment in Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan. In 2009, he bought an island off the main coast of Belize where he plans to build an eco-friendly resort. In 2014, DiCaprio bought Dinah Shore’s former home in Palm Springs, California.
