Biography, Life story
Naomi Watts was born on September 28, 1968, in Shoreham, Kent, England. Her father, Peter Watts, was a sound engineer and concert promoter who worked with the famous British band Pink Floyd. Her mother, Myfanwy Edwards, had several roles in the film industry, including costume designer, set designer, antiques dealer, and makeup artist for television commercials. Her parents divorced when she was four, and she and her brother, Ben, moved several times with their mother in northern England. In 1974, her father left Pink Floyd and reconciled with her mother shortly after. Two years later, her father was found dead in an apartment due to a heroin overdose. She lived with her mother in Wales until the age of 14, when they moved to Sydney, Australia, where her maternal grandmother was from.
Her mother enrolled her in various acting classes, and she began working as a model for television commercials, where she met actress Nicole Kidman, who became her friend. She landed her first role in the film “For Love Alone” in 1986. She did not graduate from high school because she was involved in several jobs at once and tried to become a model at 18 in Japan, but it didn’t work out. She returned to Australia and worked as a fashion editor for a magazine, then left her job to attend a drama workshop. She worked in commercials and then in several Australian television series. In 1991, she appeared in the independent Australian film “Flirting.” She moved to the United States in 1993 and struggled for several years with financial difficulties, as studios rejected her for being “not sexy enough.” Her breakthrough came when director David Lynch cast her in “Mulholland Drive,” a dreamy tale of a failed actress in Hollywood. This role opened the doors to international fame, making her one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. She starred in many successful films with some of the most famous and respected directors in Hollywood. She has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress twice: once for her role in “21 Grams” directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, and once for “The Impossible.”
