Biography, Life story
Natalie Portman was born on 9 June 1981 in West Jerusalem. Her father, Abner Hershelaj, is an Israeli Jewish enrichment and reproduction physician whose ancestors migrated to Israel from Romania and Poland. Her mother, Lashley Stevens, is a Jewish American housewife from a Jewish family who emigrated from Russia and Austria. Her grandmother and father’s grandfather died in Auschwitz, while her grandmother’s mother worked as a British spy in World War II. She meets the mother and father of Portman at a Jewish student center at Ohio State University where her mother was selling tickets. They remained in contact after the father’s return to Israel, and married several years later when her mother visited him there. In 1984, when Portman was three years old, they returned to the United States and resided in Washington, D.C., where her father studied medicine. The family moved to Connecticut since 1988, then moved to Long Island, New York, since 1990, and their stay between Jericho and New York fell apart. Portman has studied at Harvard since 1999, with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2003. She studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and received a bachelor’s degree in arts. Portman and her family currently live in Washington, D.C.
Natalie Portman has been married to French dancer Benjamán Melbei since 2012.
