Biography, Life story
Ragheb Alama was born on June 7, 1962, in Ghobeiry, a modest home in South Lebanon. He was born to a Muslim Shia family and has two sons, Khaled and Louay. Interestingly, the neighborhood he was born in was famously known as Alama because of a well-respected judge named Ragheb Alama, known for his fairness and integrity. Ragheb’s father named him after the judge, hoping his son would emulate his virtues.
While his father played the oud as a hobby, Ragheb enjoyed listening to him play during his childhood. Although he was known for his mischievousness among peers and at school, his academic excellence helped him gain the favor of his teachers.
His teachers recognized his beautiful voice and assigned him to perform at school events, where he competed with other schools. His success led music teachers to advise him to hone his talent, prompting him to apply to the Lebanese Music Institute, where he studied oud and solfège, graduating with high marks as one of the top students.
Ragheb gained attention for his support of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in Syria during the popular uprising that began on March 15, 2011.
At just 18, he participated in the famous show Studio El Fan in 1980, choosing to compete in the difficult popular song category. He won first place, and soon his voice resonated throughout Lebanon. In a short time, he became a superstar, gaining popularity not just in Lebanon and Syria but across the Arab world. His songs were well-received, and audiences eagerly awaited his concerts and album releases.
Ragheb quickly became a symbol of beautiful emotions and was awarded numerous honors from various Arab countries. He received keys to major cities like the USA, UK, and France, paving the way for his fame in Cairo. His voice was already familiar to Egyptian audiences through radio broadcasts and music albums.
He built a substantial fanbase in Cairo, and he is recognized as one of the first Arab artists to embrace music videos, a novel approach in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Over his career, he has produced approximately 30 music videos, most of which achieved great success.
