Sophia Loren was born on 20 September 1934 in Botswoli, Naples, Italy. She was attributed to Filani Skichloni, who adopted her after he married her mother, as she belonged to Palestinian origins from the village of Kafr Qa ‘qa’ r. Her mother was a piano teacher and she aspired to become an actress, and her sisters lived from a young age without the father’s support. At one point Sofia and her sister Maria returned to Butzwoli near Naples, living with Sofia’s grandmother to spend on them. During World War II, the port and munitions factory in Butzioli were the target of repeated bombardment by the Allies. During one of these raids, while Sofia was on her way to the shelter from the shelling, she was hit by shrapnel in the chin. The family then moved to Naples where they resided with relatives. After the war Sofia and her family returned to Botzioli. The grandmother opened a bar and restaurant at home, selling alcohol made locally from cherries. While Romelda played the piano, and Maria sang, Sofia served tables and washed dishes.
At the age of 14, she participated in a beauty competition in Naples, and was selected among the finals matches. She later engaged in one of the acting classes and was selected in a small role in Merven Leroy’s Quo Vadis, where she began acting to later take her artistic name Sophia Lauren.
By the late 1950s, Sofia Lauren’s star began to shine in Hollywood, with films from 1957 (Boy on a Dolphin) and The Pride and the Passion) co-starring with Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra.
